Man, thats gotta be one of the oldest shops in the webs

Okay, serious question this silly picture made me think of:
How does turbine engine efficiency scale? Would a single large turbine be better thrust per lb than many small ones of the same weight/power?

No ETOPS for you.

The fact that the 777 that this shop is made from gets over 100,000 lbs of thrust from each GE-90 turbofan seems to support that idea.

That question is SUPER complicated. Thrust and efficiency are two VERY different parameters.

As a really gullible little kid I thought shops like this were real...then I would ask my dad why I had never seen planes like this and how they even worked...let’s just say I had a bit of an isolated childhood...

I’m wondering if Boeing will go to the 808 eventually.
Don’t look at me funny, you started this train of thought.

Maybe. It’s a plane that, wherever it takes off from, will land in Hawaii.

You could just plot the current engines by their unit weight and thrust capability and see if there’s a common trend. Fit the line, find the derivative, that should tell you if where marginal gain is diminishing or increasing.
I don’t mean fuel efficiency, I mean measuring the efficiency of the thrust / weight ratio.

Yeah. I remember seeing this back in like 08’ IIRC.

Make it happen Boeing

SAMES. I legitimately thought that this was a real plane. And it’s not like I knew nothing about planes, because I did know a decent amount at the time I first saw this image. I asked my older brother & dad if it was real or not, they both said no. :(

Hah, I actually knew a bit about planes as well, which is why I asked my dad...he didn’t want to burst my bubble so he just offered some odd explanation which I accepted and moved on...

Ah. Yea, I totally whiffed on that one.
